Understanding the Average Position metric

Leading The Industry with Tracking Code Improvements

Last year, Google Analytics launched asynchronous JavaScript tracking. This was a vast improvement over conventional JavaScript, since it reduced interference with other site scripting and allowed HTML pages to fully load even if the tracking code hasn’t yet loaded.

Today we’re announcing another ground-breaking web analytics feature: client side POST support. This new feature further improves the accuracy of Google Analytics, especially for sites with very long URLs and long event tracking parameters.

Traditionally, client-side tracking code beacons have been sent via HTTP GET requests, which are limited to 2048 bytes by some browsers and proxies. Requests sent to Analytics that exceeded this limit were dropped, and the data never reached Google Analytics. Starting with this release, requests longer than 2048 bytes will be sent via HTTP POST, which has no such limit. The tracking code will now support beacons up to 8192 bytes!

This feature requires no user configuration and has been pushed in the latest version of the JavaScript tracking code. With this new capability we hope to bring you even more innovative features in the coming months.

Opening Day...

Its the best time of the year....the closing rounds of March Madness and opening day of baseball!

This past week, I spent the entire week immersed in baseball!  My son plays high school baseball and their team travels to Florida during spring break and plays baseball 24x7!  I love it!

Great trip, great weather...and great baseball.

To my point...  Opening Day!

It's fresh, its new and everyone is newly trained on what to do, how to act and how to interact.  It's perfect!

My question...why cannot it not be that way everyday??

Marty Cohen, founder of Cohen Brown Sales Training had a quote that I loved...for each client, it is ALWAYS opening night!  His point...that the customer's visit might the 1st time ever for their interaction with your bank/CU or it may be their 12th time this week...but it should ALWAYS have that special feeling and focus.

How can YOU make this happen at your bank/CU?

Five steps...
  1. Set the stage with the staff so that they KNOW what the expectations are
  2. Constantly inspect...let people know that you WILL be checking up on their actions
  3. Share insights...on WHY we want to be perfect EVERY time
  4. Share highlights...on WHERE it is going great
  5. Recover...it is NEVER too late to fix, retrain, move, or mentor...is is ALWAYS a bad idea to wait
Cheers...

Converting Your Facebook Profile to a Page

Today’s “Facebook Friday” tip is HUGE for those businesses who mistakenly (or maybe even knowingly) created a facebook profile instead of a facebook page.  This tip hit my twitterverse thanks to @ashleytcaldwell.  She’s on my “all-time-faves” twitter list, and I can’t say enough about how well that list has served me!

Did you create a facebook profile instead of a biz page? Do you know the difference? One way to know if you have a profile or a page is that people "friend" a profile (because it's supposed to be a person) and people "like" a business page. FB pages can't request friendships, which is why some businesses felt that operating as a profile (person) was more desirable than creating a business page. For many reasons, it's best (hands-down) to create a Facebook business page, not a profile, if you are a business.  In Facebook's own words: "Pages offer more robust features for organizations, businesses, brands, and public figures, which you can learn more about here."

I’ve seen some pretty creative names used for profiles, so I know there are more than just a few businesses who created profiles instead of pages for one reason or another.  I actually made this mistake in 2004, when I created a FB profile for Columbia, SC.  Even those of us who know and love Facebook have had to learn along the way!

If you’re a business running a profile instead of a page on Facebook, now is a great time to convert your profile to a page!

Here’s a link to FAQs and info on this process from Facebook:

Here's the Mashable article that shares info about this feature:

Please note: “Be aware that when you convert your profile to a Page, your profile pictures will be transferred, and all of your friends will be automatically added as people who like your Page. No other content will be carried over to your new Page, so be sure to save any important content before beginning your migration.”

Also, “Migrating is irreversible at this time, so you may want to download your profile information — including photos, wall posts, messages and friend list — before making the switch.”

New! Google Analytics Gift Cards

You may have noticed in your local supermarket, coffee shop or video store an exciting new item - Google Analytics Gift Cards (beta)! They’re good for redeeming in any Google Analytics profile for additional intelligence in your Intelligence reports. And the great part is, you can give them away to friends or colleagues who you think could benefit from more Intelligence. They’re the perfect gift for your boss’s upcoming birthday.

Google Analytics Gift Card

So why would you need additional Intelligence? For starters, you’ll get new alerts in your Intelligence reports that are only available by redeeming the Google Analytics Gift Card. The new alerts are even more sensitive and smart. For example, a new alert will be triggered when the system finds one of your pages a little too loud or noisy from a design standpoint, or if your checkout process is annoying, or whenever there's use of blinking, neon, non-hyperlinked text on your site.

The Gift Cards offer the new Intelligence Alerts in amounts of 5, 10 and 500 - for people who really, really need more Intelligence. They’re still in beta, but should be available in a store near you at some point in the coming weeks most likely, or not.

Warning: Purchasing an Analytics Intelligence Gift Card will not magically turn you into an analytics ninja.

When you’re on the road, do you notice RED CARS?

Author, innovator, and workplace dynamics coach Laura Goodrich thinks everyone can be more successful in the workplace if they just focus on “seeing red cars.” Does this sound like weird advice? If you read her manifesto, “Seeing Red Cars – Think It, See It, Do It,” you will learn how to “drive yourself, your team, and your organization to a positive future.”

Consider this scenario: how many times have you been in a meeting with co-workers, supervisors, subordinates, members of other departments, and after someone assigned you a task, you thought: I can’t do that – how many times? You have an internal discussion with yourself and begin to list the reasons why you cannot accomplish the project: not if I have to work with the people on my team, not without more resources, not without a larger budget, not without a different deadline, etc. Based on Laura Goodrich’s vast research, a myriad of examples, and yes, even your (the reader’s) real-life examples, we tend to focus on “what we don’t want” which leads to unwanted results.

Now, instead of the first response, consider this alternative: If I focus on my strengths, I can accomplish the assigned task. With this mindset, you can build a positive future for your team and entire organization. Try the “Seeing Red Cars” mentality – if you think about red cars on the road, you immediately start seeing them all over: one parked by the mailbox, one making a left turn at the corner, one leaving the drive-thru at McDonalds. You begin to wonder, does everyone have a red car? The answer is no, but you are noticing red cars because you are focused on red cars. Now, imagine how different your workplace would be if all employees focused their energies in a positive manner. Results would dramatically change: product launches would happen quicker, deadlines would be met with less resistance, opposing departments would no longer complain about working together.

Which of the following two team members would you want to work with?

Choice 1: Does anyone really say this? Sadly, too many employees speak or behave like this uninspired example.

“What I want is to engage in a conversation and say something offensive so that the other person says something that is equally or even more offensive. I’ll then respond in kind and storm away from the conversation steaming mad.”

Choice 2: Here’s an example of the Seeing Red Cars mentality:

“I want to effectively manage conversations so that I bring out the best in others and create trusted and open conversation.”

As Laura Goodrich says, “In situations large and small, it comes down to intention and actions. It takes discipline, but it really works. It’s simple, but not easy.” So, try looking for red cars, and you just might witness impressive changes in your workplace.
